Cycle safe training

When the Christchurch city council came, we started to get pumped up for biking. We went to the courts for practice. We started doing left turns where you have to do a kerb ride out first then you start to bike. To do a kerb ride out, you need to raise your right hand then look over your right shoulder.

If you want to turn left, look over your right shoulder then raise your left hand (left signal) If you want to turn right, look over your right shoulder then raise your right hand (right signal). If you are in the road, you have to turn right to go in the middle of the road.
But, you have to look over your right shoulder before doing so. This is called a life saver look. When you are in the middle, you turn right. If you are nearing a stop, you have to look over your right shoulder and after that, you raise your right hand and bend your elbow. This one is called a stop sign. My favourite activity is when we turned right. First you bike then do a right signal then do a life saver look. Then we turn then do the stop sign.

-Raziel

My favourite is the left turn when you wait for 3 seconds and then turn on a different road .

-Kaitlyn

My teacher for cycle safety is named Yasmin. Yasmin was a nice, funny woman who has a ( no offense ) funny accent. She taught our group the kerb ride out, the right and left turn, and the life saver look. I didn't pass the cycle safety test for I kept on crashing on the left turn. It was also my first time biking.

-Raziel

My teacher was named uh I dunno.... But He was funny even if I didn't pass the test. He taught us the kerb ride out, the right turn and left turn, and the life saver look.

-Kaitlyn

The Little Match Girl's Christmas

It was One Sunny day but as the afternoon came it became Cloudy. As I stepped inside the Hall, I felt my heartbeat going speedy. I ignored the feeling and searched for my place. I looked at everybody, It seems like I'm not the only one getting nervous. I looked at Raziel she looked fabulous she wore green dress that reaches up to her knee, she had a white necklace was sparkling nicely and her hair was tied up in a big bun, who knew it could go up this big. Ok, onto the story. My eyes searched through the crowd the place was packed up when I looked at Adrienne she was ready too then she clapped her hands five times that meant 'SHUT UP' for us. Then Kaitlyn came up and spoke," Hello and Welcome to Sacred hearts show called 'The Match Girl's Christmas and that's when my heartbeat went a little bit more faster.

The music played. I saw my family smiling at me. I sang, my voice was a little bit pitchy, I lowered my voice little, that way I wouldn't be embarrassed. My Mum tried to make me laugh, As soon as the music stop I sat down fast  and heard the bell ring I look toward it, I saw Roche holding a bell coming to the crowd. Daniel and Lance was there too. They started talking about the play. Then room 1, 2 & 5 sang a song I saw my sister sing the song. I saw the Match Girl came up and sang with the kids. After that Violet who was dressed as the Angel sang, her voice was so nice that it was like an Angels voice.  Then the match girl  sat down. She has matches in her hand. After that Mary and Joseph did their part at the last part we sang a Christmas Song.

Christmas is coming!!!

Christmas is coming
The goose is getting fat
Please put a penny in the
Old mans hat if you haven't
Got a ha'penny then God Bless You

The trip to WillowBank

On Monday the whole school  went to WillowBank we had to wait for  30 minutes for the bus to arrive at 10 am in the morning the four additional buses. Everyone went on board and travelled to WillowBank, it was quite a long a trip everyone got tired but eventually we arrived at WillowBank. We went to the entrance and saw the manager explaining the rules so the animals won't get hurt or get scared because it is important that the animals don't die, when she finished explaining she told us to go to the picnic area to eat our morning tea. After we ate our morning tea the instructors gave the teachers the maps so we know we were going to the map the map had a guide line. When everyone set off we went back near the entrance there was a huge eel it's was like longer than Byron and Raziel. When we finished looking at the eels and fish we went past Maori houses it made me think about the Philippines because back in the old days we used to have wooden house and flax houses. After we saw all the fish, birds and eels we followed Mrs Williams to the kiwi dark house we were all very quiet so we wouldn't scare the kiwi's away the kiwi house had a tunnel so we had to follow the tunnel when we went inside the kiwi house it was really boring because it was all silent even the kiwi's couldn't make a sound when JM found the kiwi everybody huddled at JM I was shocked it was my first time seeing a kiwi I was full of excitement I wasn't bored anymore so I tried to find one and in the dark bushes I saw something moving in the bushes it was very obvious because all I know about kiwi's is they hide in very dark places. When some of my classmates went outside I followed them and waited outside the exit area of the kiwi house near the kiwi exit area there was two other habitats it was weird because I saw a kiwi wondering around its habitat I thought it was a kiwi but it's name was Wika it's very similar to the kiwi. When the detectives JM, Annabel, Francis and Mrs Williams finished looking at the kiwi house we moved along into a new habitat when we arrived at the swan and ducks habitat three ducks were fighting Ezra,  JM,  Jes Pol,  Francis and I had a bet on which duck would win the fight, it was halirious because the duck I bet on, won because it ripped the other ducks wings. When we finished eating our lunch we first went to the huge eels and

saw a lady see was very brave she was feeding the eels with a spoon it looked very dangerous to me because the eels tried to bite the old lady's hand but she was being brave when she left everyone went into the plank and touched the eels it was very huge the biggest one was 5 1/2 long it was very fun I had lots of fun after we finished seeing the eels we went back to the picnic area to pack our stuff we started walking outside to the bus to go back to school.

A legend of jumping

As Mr. McManus was driving Roche and I to Ashburton. I wanted to go back to sleep, but I know Mr McManus would just make fun of me when I woke up. It took as 1 hour to get to Ashburton. When
we got there Mr. McManus parked the car, we took all our stuff, then we walked to our area. We were 30 minutes early before the Canterbury central started. I felt very very nervous for my first event which started at 9:00. I kept thinking about what I needed to do when I jumped, speed and long, speed and long I kept repeating it over and over again inside my head.

When it was marshalling time, the instructor marshalled 11 year old boys long jump. It was my time, the lady in the long jump pit came to us and said we can have a few practise jumps so I did. Then the lady called out all our names in order. It was my turn for my first jump, when I was running I kept thinking about speed speed long long. LAND!!!!!!! My first jump was 4.03. I was so shocked that  I jumped so short. My second jump, speed speed and once again, LAND!!!!!!! My second jump was 4.33 I said to my self " a lot  better". My third jump, I said to my self "I've got to make this one very long" speed speed speed. PERFECT LANDING!!!!! 4. 53 woohoo. When we gathered around I looked down to find my name, I CAME 5th YEAH!!!!!

I had a lot of fun at Canterbury centrals in Ashburton. First and best experience in centrals. Tiring but fun.

Canterbury champs

Getting nervous and nervous waiting for time to past I was continually checking the time over and over again as time went past I started heading towards the discus area all the girls started arriving at the area. As the lady put us in numbers up to about 35  she gave me number 20 . Every one was almost there but some were still at other events. So we decided to start as the girls began to throw I started to get a rough idea of how they were throwing it was nearly my turn many people got no throw the girl before me was getting ready to throw. My turn was up my hands started to get sweaty I grabbed a discus, I stepped in the circle, then I put my foot in the position I aimed I started to swing then I threw the discus but it wasn't very good  but I still had another throw as I walked out of the back of the circle I saw Mr McManus was watching me I got nervous again. I had to wait to throw as we were waiting the disable people came to throw and surprisingly they did pretty good.there were two girls that threw outstanding throws but I still had a chance to come in a place I was getting ready throw again as I got the discus and I was thinking this is all or nothing  I aimed and only swung two times and the discus landed very close two the girl who was coming first we were close to finishing  I was. Hoping that the other girls did bad. As the people were measuring  they wrote them down they couldn't announce  who came 1st,2nd and 3rd  because there as a girl who was still not at the event but I was coming in 2nd place the girl didn't show so I came in 2nd place throwing 21.36 metres and I was announced the first person to get a certificate for athletics at school.

The Taste Of NZ

This week room 4 and 6 had a NZ food tasting experience.
We tried a variety of foods associated with New Zealand.
Some of the foods some people had never tried before.
For example Jes Pol had never tried pavlova and Eskimos.
Some of our favourites were pavlova and marmite.
For some people the experience was bad but for most it was good.
The NZ food tasting experience was a great opportunity to experience the foods of New Zealand.

Sweet Or Sour?

Today in discovery we made a sour lemon soda made of lemon juice and lemonade.
First our group got some lemons from our class garden we picked them from the lemon tree.
Once we had finished picking the lemons we started to cut them and squeeze the lemons juice into a small plastic measuring container.
After a while the lemons had all been squeezed so we went outside again to look at the garden.
Whilst out in the garden we picked some spring onions and some very small carrots.
Once we had finished we went inside to finish making the drink and clean and cut the vegetables we had picked.
When we had finished cleaning and slicing the vegetables we finished the lemon soda by taking a small spoon of lemon juice and pouring it into the lemonade.
The outcome of the drink was AMAZING most people liked it for its refreshing flavours.
Today's activities were very fun.

Making piklets and cream

As Miss Duncan walked into the room we all sat down with excitement. Then Miss Duncan prepared the recipe and the equipment on the table, she called Francis' name out for him to call out the steps and ingredients, she called out names to mix the ingredients together. Later on Miss Duncan cooked the piklets but accidentally burnt most of the piklets. While she was cooking we made whipped cream and we took turns to mix it. When it was time to eat we put the cream ontop of the delicious piklets and ate the superb piklets.

FUN PIKLETS

As "Miss Duncan was preparing all the recipe, we were all excited about making piklets for our morning tea. We all sat down on chairs then Miss Duncan called people to put utensils on the table. She called Francis name to call out the steps and ingredients for our picklets. She called names to mix and and do stuff to put the ingredients to make it. Mix mix mix. Then a few minutes later Miss Duncan was cooking the piklets but accidentally burnt most of the piklets, but when we tasted it and put some cream up top it was very very yummy and very very delicious.

The Dead Tree

The tree stood there, lifeless and still under the gloomy sky. The howling wind swayed the branches violently and the brown leaves began to fall.

Then the roaring of a chainsaw could be heard over everything in the area. The blade made contact with one of its fragile branches and it began to fall. It landed with a soft thud on the ground. The roaring of the chainsaw continued as it began to make its way through the branches. One by one, the branches began to fall.

The blade began to cut through the trunk with a loud screech. It plummeted into the earth and began to roll into the green blades of grass.

Road Patrollers Made Safe

Today the city council visited our school to cut down the bushy flaxes that was covering the view of the road patrollers from seeing all the cars down Poulson St.
It took a long time to cut all the flaxes down before we road patrollers could finally see. Once the city council man came out last week he was quick to get this auctioned.

It is great our patrollers can see and keep the children safe again.

A day at the zones

Arrving at Hilmorton High athletic grounds, for the first time feeling nervous and scared, I was thinking this was going to be a long day. As we walked around the corner I could see the people setting up the events which looked just like our school athletics but different and bigger. All the schools sitting behide their signs. Walking across the field we reached our sign.

Setting the mat up and putting our bags down. We were waiting and watched the other schools competing until our events started. My first event was 10 year old girl sprints which was about to begin so I started walking towards the track, I was waiting for my turn, then I heard the man call my  name I got into a line, then I focused. The words he said were, "On your marks, Get set," then he quickly pressed a button and away we ran, running for a life time. Unfortunately I didn't come in a place but I still had two more chances.

I was still looking forward to my favourite event which was Discus. But I had to wait for a while. When it was time for disucs I was feeling excited walking towards the event, but I didn't know how much competition I had. Seeing the other girls throwing one by one the line getting shorter it was nearly my turn. I started thinking about it a lot more. As the lady said my name  it was time for action. I got up to the step and swung a little and threw the discus and I surprisingly threw well the next throw I threw further but my last on I got the same mark. At the end they mesured them. Then she said who came first second and third. I'm happy to say I came 1st throwing 15.83 metres in 10 year old girls.

One more event to go which was long jump, I was getting ready, I ran up, my foot hit the mat and I jumped. I continued jumping until we finished. unfortunately I didn't get a place.

At least I won one event so I'm going to Ashburton to compete against other Canterbury schools.  I'm happy about it but scared. Spending the whole day at the zones was exciting, exhausting and was fun for the first time.

A day at Zone Athletics

I felt nervous walking to the athletics track with my school, at the same time I felt excited for my first  event. We all went to our area, we put out our tarpaulin, dropped our bags and waited for the instructor to tell us what to do between the events.

After a few minutes the instructor said " all the 11 year old boys discuss please go to the area ." that was the time for Mart's  first event. I felt excited for him to win the discuss challenge. When Mart came back he told us he came 4th at discuss. Then Mart and the rest of the people in our group rested and got ready for the next event. Then the instructor picks up her megaphone and told all the schools, "Can all the 11year old boys long jump please go to the pit."

The instructor of the long jump called all our names and we lined up in the same order. It was a big group of long jumpers. Now it was my turn to jump. The girl in the chair sitting down raised her hand up and I knew it was my turn. I ran as fast as I could, when I was on the mat I jumped in the colour red then Landed! I quickly get away from the sand, then the measuring girl said "4.56" then I said to myself " fhewfh! Then I lined up again. After the people in front of me were finished it was my turn, I ran as fast as I could, I jumped off the colour red again. The measuring girl told me it was 4.78m. Woohoo!! That jump was my longest jump ever, I even beat my longest jump at school athletics. When the lady told us to gather around, the first name I saw was Mart's name and beside Marts name he came 6th and I was shocked that the lady called my name that I am going to centrals and came 2nd in long jump. Mart and I came back to our area together then Mrs Williams said, "How did you boys go?" I told Mrs Williams I came 2nd and Mart came 6th.

Then I rested for my next event which was high jump. I rested about 1 hour and 15 minutes then it was Ezra's and my turn. Ezra and I went together in the high jump area. My highest was 1.25 meters at school athletics day. I wish I could jump higher than my best jump, but unfortunately I came 4th and 4th place doesn't go to centrals. Ezra came 5th place because he really needed to go to the toilet, that's the reason.

It was the relay teams turn to run, Lance, Charles, Rommel, and Clifford. First they were coming 2nd then we held our place but then Rommel slipped and dropped the baton and Clifford picked it up but it was supposed to be Rommel picking it up giving it to Clifford, but Clifford picked it up so the Sacred Heart relay team got disqualified.

It was time for my last event of all, sprints 100 meters. BANG!!! I ran as fast as I could. There was a kid winning as all I was coming was 2nd or 3rd, I stepped on the finished line. the lady said I came 3rd but only 1st and 2nd goes to the final. I felt disappointed in my self, but at least I tried my best and I had fun.

Mart, Clifford and I asked Mrs Williams if we could go now, Mrs Williams said "okay" so we went to Clifford's Dad. It was a very, very exhausting day for me and for all of the zone athletes.

Hope I can go back next year!!!

My Bike Baron app review

This game is a challenging addictive game and I guarantee that you will never hate this game.
When you play this game you need to try to get coins and dodge tnt. If you like hard games play Bike Baron  on extreme or hard. If you like simple play then go on the easy mode and you will love it.
You are in control of Bike Baron who moves when ever you touch the screen and you can go through fire loops and you control a speedy motor bike.
The aim of the game is to get 100% on every level while being aware of ramps.

Best bits

Falling off the bike
Fire circle
Going over ramps
Variety of tracks
Trying new levels
Speed bike
Lots of coins
Going too fast and falling off the bike
Getting excited

Rating
I rate Bike Baron 4 out of 5 because you can choose if you want it to be easy or hard. I think that BikeBaron could be a 5 out of 5 if it was online so you could verse other people.

Bike Baron app review

This app is a challenging game to play. It's super fun with the games challenges. One warning though it's very additive, just so you know! There are different levels on Bike Baron. You have to try to get all the coins and dodge the T.N.T. Plus it's action packed. The level called 'don't stop' is a very challenging track because it's an ice track. I rate bike Baron 3 out of 5 because I find the game fun and challenging but sometimes when you go over the check point it doesn't activate.

Tasting our salad

Last week we made salad with sliver beet from our garden. The ingredients for our salad were cabbage, mint, mustard and vinegar. We poured the vinegar over before we ate it. It was a bit yummy. It tasted like Vinegar and it tasted sweet.

The victory match

It was a bleak morning with the sound of the  wind roaring over the silence. As I walked on the still court I felt sudden nerves go to me. I won the toss and choose to serve point by point my confidence grew on top of  my nerves. In the end there was no point of  nerves to come back because I won
6-0-6-0. My next match was a few hours away so I went to get some lunch. I came back just in time to hear my name called. When I stepped on the court I felt confident and only a little bit  nervous but I knew it will go away. I won the toss and chose to serve. I hit so winners and won 6-2-6-2. The day ended with a trip to Carls Jnr it was delicious!

I went to bed at 7:30 and woke up at 7:30. A new day I felt fresh but nervous. When I got to the place I played I was called. I won the toss again and I chose to  serve I won in a tough game 6-3-6-4. 2 hours later I was called I played the 3rd seeded I won the toss again and chose to serve the match was tight. In the end I won in 3 sets 6-3-3-6-6-1.

It was the next day, I walked up the tall steps and I was on court. The weather was warm with light winds. I was on court 9. The warm up took about 5 minutes I was nervous. I won the toss and chose to serve. I won the first point with a winning shot. The first game went so fast. I was up 5-0 and lost the next 2 games. I managed to win the next game. The second set was easier I was up 4-1 and won the next 2 games.

I was so happy and proud of myself. The prize giving was at 12:30. I had another hour left so we went to a sushi place to have lunch. I went back to the prize giving. I went up to get my trophy and my $400 travel voucher. I was surprised. After the prize giving I was picked to go on a 4 day camp in Auckland which was very hard but fun. Everyday we had to wake up at 6 o'clock and run around a track 5 times and play tennis for about 3-4 hours each day.
Me with my trophy at school!!!!

Boots

I watched the rain splash on the streets.

It's been raining for weeks, but the grey skies still hadn't eased its crying. The town looked gloomy and emotionless under the clouds.
I moved away from the window and toward the door. On the porch, my boots were sitting there, waiting for me.
I slid them on and stomped down the slippery steps.
Large puddles caught my eye, just begging to be splashed about.
A grin crept onto my face as I stepped into the nearest pool of water. The rain was starting to soak into my scalp, but I didn't care.

Erin Simpson...AT OUR SCHOOL!!! (Kids screaming in background)

We were all pushing each other as we tried to get into a line. We all couldn't believe it!
Erin Simpson was coming to our school! The Erin Simpson at our ordinary, everyday, not-so-modern, school!
It was very hard to believe. We finally organised ourselves. The girls at the back, so we can have our daily gossip and the boys at the front to catch a glimpse of the famous star.

One of us (Jayda) had snuck a piece of paper and pen into her pocket. We all walked in an orderly manner...well, we tried too. As we walked into the hall, excitement was bursting from us like...like....like heat radiating off a hot water bottle!
The seats were neatly (sort of) sorted into rows and mats were put out in the front for the juniors. The class sat down and we impatiently waited for the rest of the school.

When they had all arrived, everyone was at the edge of their seats. It was a miracle we didn't fall off. The teacher tried to calm us down, but we were too excited for that. For the teachers, it was probably like trying to teach a whale how to dance on its tail like a dolphin.

We all eventually quietened down since we wanted the best first impressions for Erin (No, we didn't do that on our own, it was only because Mr McManus growled at us like a thunder cloud.)

We had our heads turned, our eyes were staring lasers at the front door. But it was just the principal...with a stranger behind her!
Erin Simpson.
Oh. My. Gosh.

She was really here! She caused more racket than What Now did a few years ago (no offence).
The girls went bonkers (mentally) and the boys' jaws practically fell!
Erin was wearing a long black skirt and a jacket with her blonde hair flowing behind her.

She stood at the front and talked about her job. Even if she is a TV star, she needed to read heaps! There was writing and reading, it repeats itself 5 more times before she goes on TV. Erin said that she was a horrible speller, but she's better than me!

She showed us the script she had which was supposed to go on air next Monday. Then it was time for the Duffy Books.

First went Rm 1, then 2, 5, 3, 4....and finally...the best looking class ever...Room 6. We all took turns walking up. Getting our book and...actually...t-touching her hand!!!
We got to ask a few questions. If she wasn't a tv presenter, she would be a painter.

Well, that's it for now. Thank you for reading!

(Don't want to brag, but we got autographs...in our books! That beats getting it on your arm! -laughs)

Jayda on the left and Annabel on the right. Our star in the middle.

The fantastic photo of Rm 6! I know, we're very good looking!
Courtney (one of the authors) getting her book.
Annabel getting her autograph, it was chaos!

School Athletics day

It was an extreamly hot day in Christchurch yesterday and athletics day was great. I was very nervous and excited at the same time. I was just trying to think of what I will do if I lost.  I was walking through the gate and I saw everyone sitting in straight lines, that was when I felt sick. I quickly lined up behind them ready to go. The first activity was target throw. I was not very nervous with that because it was easy but fun too. After that I went to sprints which was the most scary thing out of the lot. We finally found out who we were going to race. I was racing Mart, Jes Pol, Sam, Francis, Angelo and Ezra. I got over my nerves  and won with Sam and Ezra close behind. In the final I ran against first, second and third place but I came second because I stopped on the line and Ezra came zooming past. Next up was high jump and I failed on the first round and Ezra and Mart came first equal. After that was throw or discuss and I got two points but I was still stink and JM was first for the boys and Emma won but with Kaitlyn close behind in second. When I found out long distance was next I was so excited and I won and Ezra come second. After that we did a funny little game and it included running, hola hooping and skipping rope. Our team won three times but I think we cheated! I really enjoyed athletics this year.

Our New Pallet

For the past few weeks we have planted plants and cared for them, but today a spectacular thing happened in our garden, we were given a new addition to our garden, a new pallet.

First of all we had to loosen up the soil for the plants because without that step we wouldn't have been able to dig deep down. Secondly we dug some holes for the plants to go in. Finally we planted a few plants which include things like silver beet, lettuce, pumpkins and carrots.

This is a fantastic addition to our garden because it gives us more space to plant veges and fruits. That means we can grow different kinds of plants. We hope that we will get more additions to our garden in the near future.

Dancing like the Stars

Yes we were absolute stars in the last week of term 3.
All the class spent 13 lessons learning how to dance - with a partner even and then presented to a full Aruroa center.
